Massimo Polello
-
Massimo Polello is a master contemporary calligrapher born in 1970 in Turin, Italy, where he currently lives and works. He has gained recognition as Italy's leading contemporary calligrapher and has exhibited his work extensively around the world.
Polello's painting style is unique, as he combines contemporary expressionist painting with traditional calligraphy. He blends classic calligraphic techniques with painterly experimentation and the use of innovative materials like resins, varnishes, and unconventional media. He is always on the lookout for recycled materials to which he likes to give a new identity, moving away from the stereotyped use of paper and canvases.
After studying the traditional calligraphic styles, Polello created his own language and an ontologically expressive approach aimed at imparting the culture of calligraphic art in a contemporary context. He draws inspiration from contemporary music, poetry, and literature for the texts he uses in his work.
In Polello's works, the alphabet takes on a new dimension, transcending the typical function of written language. The letters become images that convey the value of shape and gesture, imbuing each sign with a symbolic and abstract value.
Polello has collaborated with artist and film-maker Peter Greenaway in the video installation and catalogue "Peopling the Palace" for the opening of Venaria Castle, Turin. In recent years, he has participated in major competitions, given workshops and training on calligraphy, and displayed his work in collective and solo national and international exhibitions.
